Criminal Law Questioned

Alan Sandrake, a 75 year old grandfather, was jailed for six weeks in Singapore one day after his book ‘Once a Jolly Hangman’was released. The book by a Alan Shadrake was banned in Singapore as it exposed the criminal justice system and revealed some of the high profile cases in the recent years. It was once sold in Singapore at Kinokuniya bookstore in 2010 and taken off the shelves a few days later after being told to do so by MDA (Media Development Authority).

The book annoyed some parties especially the government, as much of the information were from the Central Narcotic Bureau officers, lawyers, activists, achieve records, news reports and also courts documents. Some of the interesting information was from the executioner himself, a grandfather who has been in the profession since the British Colonial in the mid 50’s. He has been using the method taught by his established long-service British hangman master on how to apply the instantaneous and painless death. He holds the record of hanging 18 men single-handedly in a day.

The book was has open many reader's minds on how the law system works in Singapore. Many are interested including younger generation of Singaporeans as they are much aware of the world issues from my point of view.
